HOW TO START READING BOOKS?
Reading is a journey. It helps us to explore and learn different things in the world while sitting in one place. It has the capability of creating magic. The contrasting emotions can be experienced by reading more stories. After all, in the end, we will all become stories. So, here I have listed down some of the foremost tips. I think these would be of great help for the readers to start the marvelous, and adventurous journey!!
1. DON’T FORCE YOURSELF TO READ
My first and foremost tip to start the journey of reading is not to force yourself. Don’t read a book because many people do that, or many influencers on social media say so. When you pressure yourselves, you end up not enjoying it. Read with the whole heart!
2. ONE STEP AT A TIME
Start reading by reading beginners friendly books which are light. There is an umpteen number of books which is exclusively for beginners. If you are very new to reading, ask your family member or friends who has already set their foot in reading.
I have also written a blog post on how to select a book for beginners. In case if you are interested, do check out. Here is the link – “10 Tips on how to select a book!“.
3. MOTIVATE YOURSELF
One of the pro-tips to start reading is by choosing books that contain many short stories. It will help you knock down the fear that builds inside everyone when you start a new routine. If you read short stories, it will consume a short time than the big novels. So, it will motivate you to read more. It gives the satisfaction of completeness of your newfound routine (reading).
4. EXPLORE ALL THE PATHS
Reading is an ocean. Books are into several genres like a children’s book, teen fiction, young adult romance, fantasy, romance, thrillers, horror, humor, comics, non-fiction, anthologies, biographies, memoir, graphic novels, mythology, collection of poems, etc. I like to advise all the readers to explore all the genres like the children’s books which hold many values that help us in many ways. So, don’t limit yourself. Reading has no age limit.
I read Enid Blyton books (famous children author) during my teenage. I read the Family series and The Naughtiest Girl series. Honestly, I enjoyed every bit of it.
5. VISIT LIBRARY / BOOKSTORES
Paying a visit to the library at your place is a very cheap way of building the reading habit. It is advisable for beginners because you can spend some time browsing and reading the book. If the book catches your interest, then you can rent them using your library card. Or if you want your copy, then visit book houses. There also you can spend time and shop for yourself. If you feel the price of the fresh copy of the book bit steep, you can always go for second-hand book shops. There, you can get books at a low price and also of good quality. But sadly, it is hard to find such shops. You can also visit the bookfair that happens every year at your place.
6. PREFER BOOKS WITH PICTURES & BETTER FONTS
While you start a book, pictures, and font in that book play a vital role in your reading. For a beginner, it is a piece of great advice to start with pretty good size fonts. Because small fonts may affect the eyesight and rarely it will cause a headache. And prefer books which have many pictures. These two factors will decide your reading journey to uphill or downhill. Also, these two factors stir the interest in readers to read more.
7. HUNT DOWN BOOK LOVERS IN YOUR CIRCLE
- Find book-loving people in your circle as it holds many benefits that help in your journey.
- You can always swap the books between them.
- You can get help from them to choose books when you are out of titles.
- You can share your feelings about the book.
- You can hold discussions about beyond doubtful questions and create a book club.
- Others can always encourage you to read more and also helps you to knock off the reader’s block.
8. GRAB PAGE TURNERS
Choose the books which are fascinating, gripping and also the ones which catch your interest. Because if the book is not gripping, the beginners will undoubtfully lose their interest in reading. So, choose wisely!
9. FOLLOW BOOK REVIEWERS
Exploration comes at the best of browsing and searching. So, follow some good book reviewers on different platforms like Blogs, YouTube, Instagram, etc. In blogs, sign up for free newsletters to get notified whenever the blogger posts new reviews. But be aware of spoilers.
I follow a handful of book reviewers on different platforms. Even if I am not reading all the books they suggest, I note it down. It is always good to gain knowledge about books. The merit of following a book reviewer is that they kindle the interest to read certain books. It is okay to get help from people. So, don’t shy away.

10. SET PERFECT TIME FOR READING BOOKS
Reading be done at any time. It can be morning, evening, or night. Even it can be during the time you travel to your workplace while returning home or during waiting periods. It is entirely up to the readers to decide a perfect time for reading at their convenience. And also, don’t restrict yourself to read-only at your reading time. You can always read at any time and any place. Don’t feel substandard about what people think about you. Because even if you explain, people always speak about it again and again. So, relax!
11. PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOU READ
Paying attention to what you read is very important regarding reading. I highly advise the readers to keep away their phones while reading. So, one can read without any distractions. Even if you read for a quarter of an hour, give full attention to whatever you read. When you read without distractions, you will experience a different world in the book.
Dear readers, these are the few tips one can easily follow to start reading. Still, these tips are not working. Don’t worry. I have few more ways that will engage the people in reading.
12. READ FOR SOMEONE
If you still couldn’t convince yourself to read a book. Read for someone like your children, grandparents, siblings, etc. It will at least help you to read more. When you start reading for others, at one point, you will be interested to know more about it. By taking this tip seriously, one can spend some quality time with their loved ones and with their books.
13. DON’T PAR-TAKE CHALLENGES
Readers, at the beginning stage, don’t kindly partake in any reading challenges. The challenges will merely put you under pressure to complete the book. Also, don’t set any reading goals very highly. Remember that you are a beginner. So be kind to yourself!
14. DON’T FEEL GUILT
One of the pro-tips, for the readers, is not to feel guilt that you are wasting your time reading. Remember, reading is never a waste of time. Don’t think that only from the self-help books we could learn many things. By reading fantasy, the readers can improve their imagination skills. Reading is a way of upgrading your life. So, upgrading your life is never a waste of time. Remove all the guilts and start reading.
15. ENJOY READING
Whatever you read, do it slowly, understand the concept or plot. Enjoy each chapter of the book like you will enjoy the movie. Don’t ever read just for the sake of you being a reader.
Dear readers, it is never too late to start reading. So, start today, read anything that you wish to read. Remember,
“ We sometimes lose ourselves in books, and we find ourselves in the books too”. So, set yourselves to know more about yourself!
