Hey folks! Welcome back to the reader’s corner. In today’s blog, I am going to share my views on another historical fiction book “Sivagamiyin Sabatham”. The great author Ramaswamy Krishnamurthy famously known by his pen name Kalki wrote this epic. He is an author, poet mostly well known for his works on historical fiction. Without any delay let’s get into the era of arts and architecture!!
I also have reviewed Ponniyin Selvan, another great epic by the same author. Here is the link – Ponniyin selvan.
This book is all about love and war waged during the great Pallava period mainly during the king Mahendravarman I and his son Narasimhavarman I. It also narrates the love story of Narasimhavarman and Sivagami which takes various twist and turns… The king’s love for art and architecture leads to wage a great war in the history against the Chalukyas king Pulikeshin II. This book consists of two volumes with four parts which have beautiful descriptions, songs, sonnets, illustrations, etc.
INTERESTING THINGS THE BOOK TELLS
This book tells us how the king Mahendravarman had great respect towards all the art forms and the artist. The way he showered love towards all the religions were mind-blowing. Speaking about the war tactics of King Mahendravarman is simply very astonishing.
After his reign then comes to his son another mammoth ruler Narasimhavarman who also had some level of interest as his father towards various religions, art forms, and the artist. Both the rulers had great forward-thinking about their land as well as the artforms mainly to the dance form called Bharatanatyam and sculptures. The author had written the script on such a level so while reading the book it will take us to that golden era.
Sivagamiyin Sabatham tells more about the capital city of Pallavas, Kanchipuram which was well known as the educational city and the place where people will go to learn various art forms and also the religiously enriched city. The shore town now known as Mahabalipuram took its birth during the Pallavas period which was also detailly delineated in this book.
Sivagamiyin Sabatham is full of amazing illustrations by MANIYAN SELVAN which is mind-blowing. These illustrations literally take us aboard to that golden era. Each illustration has gone hand in hand with the author’s words.
THE MOST LOVED CHARACTERS
Paranjothi, the most loyal friend of Narasimhavarman and the trusted chief of the Pallava army. Kannapiran, the charioteer of Narasimhavarman. And Naganandhi, a Buddhist priest. These are the most loved character apart from the main characters. I have a certain level of respect towards these characters because of the way it is portrayed.
THE MOST LOVED LINE
While reading this line, I realized the very truth of it. Here is the line,
“Not all the sorrows are sorrows and not all the happiness is happiness it is just a feeling and believe that this too shall pass.”
So, this is all about the book. When I completed this book, I was speechless and left with no words to write a review. I was awestruck because the book is a pack of love towards family, country, religion, arts and artists and hatred, and disappointments. Eventually, I realized that ‘LOVE IS ETERNAL’ that can be towards anything it can be towards humans or artforms…Hence, I strongly recommend this book to all the readers to realize what I realized.
